Can't Have Too Much Of A Good Thing: A Brief Outing With Another Glitchy Canon Powershot A80
Can't Have Too Much Of A Good Thing: A Brief Outing With Another Glitchy Canon Powershot A80
A week or so ago, I came across the Canon Powershot A80, and it's failing sensor. I picked one up, which has been great fun, but it's been a bit hit and miss, with a few blank screens, and I fear that the sensor may be closer to complete failure than I had hoped. So I did the only thing possible: I found and ordered a second one.
Like the first A80, I searched for items that were labelled, 'for parts or not working', and I also made sure that the images in the eBay posts included a photo of the camera switched on with the display showing the glitch. The post I came across, from a German seller, was titled, 'Canon PowerShot A80 digital camera, silver, excellent condition but defective'. In the post, the camera was described as, 'in excellent condition, almost like new. Unfortunately, it is partially defective! It powers on but only displays a distorted purple image ... Therefore, it is being offered as a spare part/defective item'. Looking at the posts, it was ideal for me, and within a week it had arrived.
Of course, the day I wanted to take it out, the weather turned rainy again, so I didn't get that much time out with it. However, I did manage to grab a couple of images, and quite frankly, the corruption of the images were outstanding, just like the first A80. But then something odd happened; the images on the LCD, and on the sensor, stopped glitching. I only had time for a couple of frames before the rain returned, so I had to wait to see if this was a one-off.
A couple of days later, the sky cleared and the sun reappeared. It was the perfect time for a 'walk around the block', so I packed the two failing sensor Canon Powershot A80s and headed out. The original A80 behaved impeccably, with some lovely glitchy images from its failing sensor(https://keithdevereux.wordpress.com/2026/03/01/a-walk-around-the-block-a-session-with-the-original-failing-sensor-canon-powershot-a80/), but the 'new' A80 was just not glitching at all! Yes, there was some discolouration in the sky, but the images were almost ... normal. I cannot deny it, I was a little deflated and only took a few images compared to the original A80, the results from which I adored. I'm going to leave the new A80 alone for a while, just to see if the glitching sensor returns. In the meantime, I'll be out and about with the original A80,
