A Walk Around The Block: A Session With The Original Failing Sensor Canon Powershot A80

This is just a short post, but I couldn't help but want to share these (to my mind) wonderful images. Also, it's a way of reminding myself about using the original failing sensor Canon Powershot A80. I took my first real 'walk around the block' this year after all the storms and rain we've been having. It's not a 'block' in the conventional urban sense, but just a large circle through the fields and planted woodland behind our house. But it takes me past some of my favourite trees and woodland that I like to go through when I'm testing 'new' cameras.

In this instance, it was my chance to take my 'new' failing sensor Canon Powershot A80 out, and test it's glitchy goodness. Unfortunately, this new (to me) A80 did not play ball, and it refused to misbehave apart from some discolouration of the image. But I also had my original failing sensor A80, and that did not disappoint. As before, in most images, the colours of the images were reduced to blurred shades of pink/purple and black.

I found the best technique was to leave the camera powered on. The first few images were quite dark, even black, and I feared that the sensor  had finally succumbed to years of use. But after a while, the LCD popped back into life and I began  to see a streaked image on the display. As before, I pre-focussed the image, by pressing the shutter halfway down, and then took the photo when the camera had finished focusing. I left the camera on between visiting different locations, and it definitely looks like the sensor needs to ‘warm up’ before taking the first images.

Again, in the middle of my walk I took a few images that were completely ‘normal’. This didn't last long, just a couple of frames, and then the sensor was glitching again. I must say, I do prefer it this way. I took a whole series of images on this walk, certainly more than I took with the new A80, and on my return home, I realised that they were all tremendous. So I’ve posted the whole series in an album on my Joomeo (https://public.joomeo.com/albums/69a16b4119b9b) if you want to see the rest of the images. Now that I'm happy with working with the original failing sensor Canon Powershot A80, I think my next outing will be a trip to Aveiro for some urban photography.
