A few digital aerochromes with the Canon Powershot A720, 22 April 2024

A few digital aerochromes with the Canon Powershot A720, 22 April 2024.

It was a lovely day today, with a clear blue sky and not too hot. I took the opportunity to head out for my customary 'walk around the block' intending to take some photographs using the Lomo Smena 8M loaded with Harman Phoenix film and an Instax Wide photograph with the Polaroid Big Shot. I also took along the Canon Powershot A720 digicam and a collection of filters to make some digital aerochromes.

I set the Canon to black and white mode and took one photograph with a Hoya 720nm Infrared filter and one with red, green and blue filters. The images were processed with GuIMP photo editor adapted from the method of Joshua Bird. The three images were copied as layers into a single image file as infared/red/green (top/middle/bottom). In the infrared layer the green and blue channels were set to zero, in the red layer the red and blue channels were set to zero, and in the green layer the green and red channels were set to zero. The blending mode of the infrared and red layers was set to 'addition', and that was it.

All that remained was to zoom into the image and move the layers around, if necessary, so they were completely aligned. After that, the files were saved as GIMP .xcf files for later and the layers flattened and exported as PNG or JPG files.
