Stencils and Street Art in Aveiro, 22 February 2022

Came across some unusual street art this morning by an unknown artist, 'larus fuscus #1'. Constructed of moss on netting in the shape of a flying gull. Sadly, it's clearly past its best, but it was probably lush and green three-dimensional in it's prime. I wonder if this was part of a series?

I have spotted this stencil at a few places around Aveiro, 'Em cada esquina um amigo' ('On every corner a friend') is the first line of Grândola, Vila Morena, a song by Jose Afonso (known as 'Zeca'), and the image is of Zeca with his fist raised in the salute of the revolution.

Zeca was one of the most influential folk and protest musicians in Portugal, and the song was used as a radio signal during the military coup of 25 April 1974, which led to the Carnation Revolution and the fall of the fascist regime.

Afonso and 'Grândola, Vila Morena' became symbols of anti-fascism, as well as of both the Portuguese labour movement and political left, and it is common in Portugal for the left in particular to stencil art anti-right wing/anti-fascist messages.
