The #ShittyCameraChallenge: Databending with the Sony PlayStation Portable, 02 June 2023

The latest Shitty Camera Challenge got underway at the beginning of June. Running until kthe end of August, this Challenge is for all Shitty Cameras and there was no specific theme like #InstantRegret or the #1990sCameraChallenge. As such we can use any camera, so long as it's Shitty, and pick any subject.

For my Shitty Camera Challenge this year I have two themes in mind, half frame 35mm and Shitty Digital with the PlayStation Portable. Not just Shitty Digital, mind you, but databent Shitty Digital.

For those not familiar with databending, it's 'editing' files (in the loosest sense of the word) by opening image files in programs not intended for editing files. For example, importing a file into Audacity audio editor or opening a photograph in a word processor like WordPad. Will this destroy the file? Absolutely, and this is what is so fascinating with this subset of Glitch Art.

I took the PlayStation Portable, fitted with the PSP-300 camera, out shopping and also to the local garden centre. The JPG files were loaded into GIMP photo editor and exported as BMP (bitmap) and TIFF files.

I then imported the files into Audacity and applied various audio effects,  like 'phaser' or 'echo'. The files were then exported and resaved as bitmap or TIFF files.
